Moreover, the news also reveal his interest in the new Windows Phone 8 , and are also preparing models based on this operating system that could appear later this year or early next year.

ZTE’s decisions in this regard are influenced by Acer’s decision to postpone the launch of a terminal based on an operating system developed by the Chinese company Alibaba Group Holding which is based on Android but has not received official approval from Google.

The development of Firefox OS seems to be on the right track , but there are still many things need to be polished if ZTE can offer a competitive mobiles that is based on this promising platform.

Would it be nice if we could create native apps for a mobile operating system open source completely in HTML, CSS and JavaScript? Well, now you can.

One of the things I’ve noticed recently is the volume of web developers with interest in the mobile world. Not surprisingly, this is one of the developing markets and fastest-growing in the world.

With this wave, many curious start to invest a little time to create apps for iPhone or Android. But, right away, collide with a tremendous barrier, different programming languages. To create native apps on iOS (iPhone OS) you need to learn Objective-C. To create native apps in Android you need to learn Java.

Then you think: "Programming language is all the same, what matters is the logic." And really, migrating from one language to another is not something that should scare a programmer. But much time is wasted in this process, especially when you need to deal with scenarios such as team size or short-term project.

This frustration can be avoided by the use of tools like PhoneGap or Titanium. What they do is provide a set of APIs, allowing you to create your apps using languages that are already used on the web and which, when finalized, are marshaled to the native languages of these devices.

Beauty is not the worst thing in the world, but what if we could create apps for a mobile operating system open source and completely done in HTML, CSS and JavaScript? This, ladies and gentlemen, is the Boot2Gecko (OS or Firefox), the operating system being developed by Mozilla.

Today I write straight from FISL (International Free Software Forum) in Porto Alegre. In recent days I have been in direct contact with the guys at Mozilla who are developing this platform and so I decided to share with you what has been rolling around here.

Before yesterday (26.07.12), Christian Heilmann ( @ codepo8 ) and John Hammink ( @ rijksband ) gave an introductory lecture on the subject. For those who do not know, Chris is the main and most popular evangelist for Mozilla in the world. And if you had never heard about this operating system, I highly recommend watch there.

Since yesterday (27.07.12) I spent the entire day at the Hackathon MozillaHQ. The goal was to create an app and submit to the Mozilla Marketplace .

Unfortunately I could not finish and submit at that time, because I took the day to exchange many ideas with these guys and shoot a video with Chris showing a mobile phone running Boot2Gecko \ o /.

And at the time of writing (28/07/12) I spent much of the day contributing to the Boot2Gecko the translation of documentation .

After all, how does it work?

The platform Boot2Gecko consists of three main layers. The lowest layer is called the Gonk, which includes the Linux kernel and every layer of abstraction to the hardware. The middle layer is the Gecko rendering engine, very similar to that used in Firefox. And the highest layer is the Gaia, responsible for user interface and is written entirely in HTML, CSS and JavaScript.

And I can use?

You can! It is now possible to install Boot2Gecko in some smartphones, but it is not advisable at this time. The project is under continuous development and lacks enough thing to do. The good news is that now you can develop apps for Mozilla Marketplace.

But how can I develop apps if I do not have a phone running it?

For that there are emulators, there is a project called Gaia Rocking where he instructs how to run the emulator. For now I will not waste much time showing how to run, since this is not the focus of the article, but to prove that the business really works, I used to record a video emulating Boot2Gecko on my machine. Check it out the beast!

When will I be able to use?

The first phones running Boot2Gecko is expected to be commercially launched in 2013 . And guess which country will get this joke? Brazil! That’s right, after an agreement between Mozilla and Telefonica, it has been determined that the sale of the first devices in the world will be in Brazil. One reason this happens is because the idea of Mozilla to address the smartphone market with affordable prices.

In conclusion

The idea is not to convince anyone that this new operating system is better than iOS or Android. The project is in development and lack a long way to go yet.

What is noteworthy here is the incredible market opportunity for Brazilians. We launched the first of the Mozilla apps Marketplace and come out ahead compared to the rest of the world.

This is the official purpose of Telefonica, which has just become involved with the Mozilla Foundation to promote Firefox mobile operating system OS. "Most people access the content on their mobile via proprietary applications", but "it is a nightmare for developers and it’s expensive to create applications for each platform", says Carlos Domingo, project manager at Telefonica,

Against proprietary systems

To remedy this, Firefox OS will "bring the mobile Web" by developing HTML 5, widely supported by Mozilla, which will use the same application on Android (Google), IOS (Apple), etc. . Internet players like Facebook and Twitter, in competition with Apple and Google, have understood the issue: they support the initiatives of the foundation.

In reality, the democratization of mobile Internet is not the main objective. Telefonica, which has just been joined by a myriad of other operators such as Deutsche Telekom, Telenor, Etisalat, Sprint or Telecom Italia, wants to especially avoid losing control of the industry. "We do not like that part of the value chain is controlled by another actor. And, in the case of emerging countries, it’s worse, because Google is now ending up in a monopoly situation, " admitted by the head of Telefonica. Android smartphones are now priced below $ 200, a price that makes the unit affordable to a portion of the population of developing countries. Apple does not intend to sell its iPhone in that price and Microsoft, Windows Phone, is not yet capable. Moreover, two Chinese manufacturers of terminals, ZTE and TCL, which makes smarpthones branded Alcatel, have joined the alliance.

As for developed countries, "provide an alternative to Apple and Google will be positive for operators" , hope Carlos Domingo. Firefox OS "will allow us to make the most of our billing systems." Still, the battle is far from won. When the first Firefox Mobile OS smartphones integrating emerge, it will be sold nearly 800 million products with Android. "It will be difficult to overtake a player who has such a base," considers an industrialist.

Thanks to @Fabricedesre, now you can easily install and run FirefoxOS on your Debian-based distributions.

Just run |build.sh| to create a .deb package that includes b2g and a gaia checkout.

A new X session is also installed, that runs b2g in full screen. Just do a long press on the [Home] key to end the session.

For detail instructions, please follow the original guide
